History & Course Design
Established in 1958 (some sources cite 1955), the course was developed by George Cobb with later renovations by Bill Love and Brian Kington in the late 2000s. The 18‑hole layout plays as a par‑71 at just over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, with multiple tee options ranging from approximately 5,700 to 7,007 yards to accommodate all levels of play.
As the home of the University’s men’s and women’s golf teams, the course has hosted Korn Ferry Tour events (formally the Melwood Prince George’s County Open) in 2010 and 2011 and numerous high‑school state championships.
Facilities & Practice Complex
The facility includes a 45‑station driving range with Bermuda grass tees, a 5,000 sq ft putting green, and short‑game practice areas including the Holman Short Game Practice Facility.
Mulligan’s Grill & Pub, the 35,000 sq ft plantation‑style clubhouse built in 1999, contains a pro shop, full bar & grill, banquet space with patio views, team locker rooms, and conference/meeting facilities.
Golf & Community Experience
The course is semi‑private: prioritizing service to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and members, while still offering public tee times year‑round.
It handles over 50,000 rounds annually and offers leagues, club tournaments (Dogfights, Twilight Golf League), and lessons including PGA‑affiliated instruction, Operation 36, and PGA Jr. programs.
Playing Characteristics
With Bermuda fairways and Bluegrass greens, the course delivers well‑groomed conditions suitable for all skill levels.
From the Black tees rating 73.7 and slope 137 down to shorter women’s tees, the layout rewards accurate tee shots and creative short‑game play.
